Survivor Nicaragua S21E02

OMG is Holly nuts or what? Throwing away the snails? Filling Danny’s $1600 shoes with sand and putting them in the water and then fessing up to the whole damn tribe? Is this woman trying to get voted out or what? Tyrone’s reaction to her confession was priceless (“one eye on her and one eye on my shoes”). She then goes off with Jimmy J, all ready to quit. Jimmy J must be feeling great that a new target to be voted out has emerged, that’s why he wants her not to quit: he wants her to be the target next time they go to TC. I’m guessing that this isn’t the last time that Holly has lost it.

Marty continues to impress. He lets Jimmy J have the leadership position, while building a solid alliance with Jill and Danny. Great job on finding the idol with Jill’s reading of the clue. There doesn’t seem to be a numbers game in Espada yet, but this threesome looks like it is in a position of power.

Sasha Na’Onka is La Flor’s nutter. Stealing Fabio’s socks, not being able to keep her mouth shut, pissing off pretty much everyone on her tribe. She was saved pretty much by Alina and Kelly B deciding to target Brenda instead, which was a smart move that backfired because Chase is infatuated with Brenda, and Shannon is his own worst enemy.

Sash is a player. He is trying something new: a minority alliance. It’s a new concept, but imagine the furor if people had started e.g., an all-white alliance. It would be called racist. Brenda laughs it off, but she is smart enough to realize that if people want her vote because she’s Hispanic/Asian/whatever she’ll go along with it.

Na’Onka sitting out of the immunity challenge was weird because she is so physical, but this gave Kelly B a chance to shine. Benry pretty much lost the challenge for La Flor, but you could argue that it wa because Espada used the MOP.

Na’Onka’s plan to out Kelly B as a weak player backfired, but she had the good sense of admitting her mistake, if only to the cameras. But, while I think she’s a dumb player, I have to give it to her that she scrambled to get Shannon out. Brenda was saved pretty much because of Na’Onka scrambling and Chase spilling the beans.

Shannon has only himself to blame for being voted out, as his meltdown contributed to people flipping their votes. He could also have targeted Na’Onka, and Chase would’ve been on board with that. By targeting Brenda, it was difficult to keep Chase in the fold. I have to give it to Shannon, that he was honest. It was Chase that flipped between alliances and seemingly can’t be trusted with any secret. The guy is a moron.

I hope Kelly B and Alina stick around. They have an idol clue which they’re not smart enough to figure out, but who knows what will happen next. It is interesting that Alina voted for Brenda, but Kelly B and Benry flipped and voted out Shannon. I’m guessing the existing alliances will be reshuffled.

Chase and Hawaii 5-0

I like the first episodes of these two new series. Hawaii 5-0 has a great setting, with brilliant visuals from Hawaii, and a very good cast that seem to be working great together. Chase is about a gorgeous female US Marshall (played by Kelli Giddish) hunting down fugitives.

Survivor Nicaragua S21E01

Another season of Survivor has started! None of the players really stand out, the way Russell did in Samoa, so it’s hard to see who the star(s) of the season will be. Nonetheless here are my first impressions:

Kelly B: pretty much the story was about her leg. I’m glad that’s out of the way, so we can see how she is as a player. She’s already found an idol clue with Alina, so that’s cool. The fact that so many people talk about voting her out already tells me that she’s not going home soon. She just needs a good alliance, which brings me to the next player…

Brenda: she found the Medallion of Power and got info out of Chase. She is Parvati-like, but more likable than Parvati so far. My guess is that she will use the information she got from Chase to vote out a guy and then go girl-power to take out the guys. The challenges will not be overly physical this season, as this would destroy Espada, so La Flor can afford to get rid of its strong guys.

Alina: I like Alina, cause she reminds me a bit of Amanda. She’s pretty, soft-spoken, she’s found an idol clue, thinking about alliances. She’s definitely a player. I can’t wait to see if she will bond with Kelly B, or will try to cut her throat.

Shannon: he’s quite a character, but unfortunately I don’t think the guys will have much of a chance in this tribe. I was thinking that Benry would have the best one-liners, but he was invisible this episode. Shannon in all his misogynistic glory takes that crown.

Chase: strong standup guy but no player. He might be used by the women to get rid of the other men.

Sash: The fact that he’s the oldest young guy doesn’t bode well for him.

Marty: I like Marty, he’s very smart, and a player.

Yve: Much hotter than she looks in the promo pics :)

Jane: She rocks, nobody had made fire on Survivor without flint before, except for Boston Rob last season.

Jimmy T: Too resentful of Jimmy J

Jimmy J: He has a good strategy, but he’s too old and he will be targeted by the middle-aged people

Holly: She flip-flopped on her alliance with Wendy too soon. She sucked at the challenge, unlike Na’Onka who poured the water very precisely

Danny: Seems to be under the radar now, resisting the temptation to be a colorful Italian guy

My favorites so far are:

From La Flor: Kelly B, Alina, Shannon
From Espada: Marty, Yve, Jimmy J

Bring on the next episode already!

Another season of Survivor is going to start into 35 days. Cast photos and profiles at EW and contestant pre-game videos at CBS. Old vs. New, hard to find immunity idols and a new Medallion of Power. Innovations are often risky, and I hope the Medallion of Power fares better than the Big Brother saboteur twist that tanked so badly this season.

I will probably go through all the info to find the people I’m going to root for before the season starts. Of course, they may turn out to be complete douches in the end, but that’s the fun of Survivor!

Prediction: Jimmy Johnson doesn’t last. Old people with lots of money don’t fare well on Survivor. If Gary from Guatemala had to hide his identity, imagine how bad JJ would wish he wasn’t as recognizable as he is. My hope is that he gets to provide some entertainment before his eventual boot (and hopefully not evacuation).

Haven on SyFy

I have watched the first two episodes of this new SyFy series based on a Stephen King novel. I love Emily Rose as the FBI agent, the stories are awesome so far, and the setting in a small town in Maine is great. This is very promising and I can’t wait for more episodes to air.

Rubicon trailer

The pilot for Rubicon has hit the web today. I plan to watch it, as the premise of a global “conspiracy” seems quite interesting. From the AMC website:

AMC taps into our collective paranoia with its compelling new conspiracy series, Rubicon. Will Travers is an intelligence analyst who cracks codes for a living. When Will’s world is shattered by an untimely death he begins asking questions, diving into a web of mystery and danger. Not every conspiracy is a theory.

I like the lead actor who has appeared in the Pacific HBO mini series recently. It should be a fun show to watch.

Most of Eurovision is trash, but there are always a few songs that are worth a second listen. Here are my choices from this year’s finalists.

#1. Cyprus

#2. Belgium

#3. Greece

#4. Ireland

#5. Albania
